I came across Avril Lavigne’s Hello Kitty video via Kiwi kawaii beauty blogger Kay Cake of I’m Ladiie Kay. The single was released on May 23rd 2014, while the music video was released nearly a month earlier on April 21st.

In the video, which had a troubled launch, Avril Lavigne, sings about Hello Kitty while dancing on location in Tokyo.

The song was inspired, Lavigne says, by her love for all things kawaii and Japanese culture, especially Hello Kitty.

While I am not a fan of the song itself, much of the controversy surrounding the video is to do with the video’s back-up dancers and their ‘robotic’ expressions. However, this article by Kei Hiruta from the Practical Ethics blog examines the issues in greater detail.
